Giving Thanks
With the celebration of candy behind us we move on to a real holiday – Thanksgiving. This has to be one of my favorite holidays. First there is a six legged turkey associated with football (how can this be a bad thing?). Next there are the games we play (any board game will do). Finally there is the tryptophan induced coma from eating too much of…well let’s just say I’ll be repenting of gluttony on November 28.
I really do enjoy Thanksgiving as one of my favorite holidays and not just because of the above list. The reality is I get to hang out with my family and that is the real reason. The whole week leading to Thanksgiving is full of activity and bustle around the house. Everyone pitches in and we work together. It’s a lot of fun as we taste the food and laugh together. My hope for you this Thanksgiving is that it is a day full of laughter and fun; low stress and a lot of hugs with family and friends.
The Bible mentions giving thanks about 70 times depending on the translation so it makes sense this is a holiday Christians should embrace. Maybe take opportunity to ask at the dinner table some iteration of: How are you thankful to God today? What are you most thankful for God doing in your life?
It is a day of Thanksgiving, so we should do just that – Give Thanks to the One who saves.
